The Utah Minority Business Center (Utah MBC) and US Department of Energy (DOE) Symposium was a memorable event. It provided a wonderful opportunity to introduce and highlight the resources the Utah MBC and DOE have to offer. Our focus was based on connecting the dots between local businesses, organizations, federal stakeholders and minority business enterprises (MBE’s). We are thrilled to share the highlights of a remarkable event that took place on August 3rd, 2023, at Dominion Energy’s Salt Lake City location.
The event was made possible by an amazing contribution from Dominion Energy as our event host. A presentation from Dominion’s Mike Gill—Director of Engineering, provided an overview of Dominion Energy initiatives, priorities, and information on how to collaborate. The dedicated members of the DOE from the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity included Shalaya Morissette—Chief of Minority and Workforce Division, Jimmy Hendrix—Management and Program Analyst, along with interns Lauren Black and Kenyetta Reid. Shalaya delivered an insightful and powerful presentation, complete with DOE opportunities ranging from funding, procurement opportunities, grants to job workforce services. Shalaya’s passion and knowledge was conspicuous, and we could not have asked for a better keynote speaker.
Our collaboration with the DOE and Dominion Energy was truly a gamechanger; Both teams’ knowledge, dedication, and commitment to the energy space was evident throughout the event from one-on-one meetings that were held, to group Q&A sessions. Together, we aimed to bridge the gaps in creating awareness while facilitating partnerships/teams and opportunities for minority-owned businesses. The level of energy and expertise of the DOE team was truly unparalleled and in real time, they provided tailored opportunities for attendees, leveraging their profound understanding of the energy and business landscape.
The attendees were grateful for the support and guidance they received, and we could not be more thankful for the positive impact created by the DOE team. Not only did this event foster connections and opportunities for our attendees, but it also deepened our ties with the energy-based community that exists in the state of Utah. By collaborating with this community, we have not only strengthened relationships but also garnered an even greater respect for how Utah represents the energy sector. We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the DOE and each member of their team for their exceptional commitment and authenticity. Their dedication made this event an outstanding success and we are immensely grateful.
The event at the Dominion Energy was a testament to the power of collaboration and a great example of how leaders in the energy sector are willing to participate in ensuring diverse opportunities are available and represented. It allowed us to unleash opportunities for minority-owned businesses, foster closer relationships with community partners, and elevate the Utah MBC’s impact. The added pleasure of having Dominion Energy speak directly to our attendees about the impact they are making today and in the future was also very constructive and edifying. Again, we want to thank Dominion Energy and the DOE and we look forward to further collaborations and initiatives that will empower and uplift the energy-based community in Utah.
